A traditional craft that belongs to the collective imagination of the Maremma is still hanging on at the Alberese Estate: the buttero. The presence of vast areas and herds of wild animals makes this job necessary and irreplaceable, one that the Tuscan Region has included among the traditional crafts at risk of extinction.
We are in the heart of the Maremma, south of Grosseto, in one of the largest estates in Europe managed using a biological agricultural method:there are over 4200 hectares, with pine forests and woodland, cultivated fields, natural pastures and olive groves.
The farm, where it is possible to stay in a country farmhouse, allows you to get to know the world of butteri better: it is possible to visit the saddlery, where the craft’s original equipment can be seen, and meet the butteri as they return from their day's work, to listen about the trade told by the true protagonists, or, for a truly immersive experience, go horse-riding with the butteri while they are working. A unique opportunity to visit the true Maremma in a privileged way, on horseback, seeing a traditional craft that still exists in our production with your own eyes.
The farm guests can take advantage of a discount for the horse riding excursions with the Butteri and will be given the ALBERESE CARD when they arrive, that gives them special discounts when buying food and agricultural products at the Bottega di Alberese shop in Alberese village.
