This museum is a good starting point for finding out more about the Etruscans on Elba.
The Archaeological Museum of Portoferraio is housed in the historical Linguella salt warehouses and holds archaeological items from the Tuscan Archipelago, arranged in a historical-topographic order. The time period goes from the end of the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD.
The museum documents the strategic role played by the Archipelago in ancient maritime tradethrough items such as vases, weapons and urns found in necropolises, villas or shipwrecks.
The remains of the Linguella Roman villa stands next to the museum. The ruins of Villa Romana delle Grotte stands at the opposite end of the Gulfo of Portoferraio, on the road to Porto Azzurro.
