Before reaching Populonia, the iron was extracted from materials mined on an island surrounded by legend: the Isle of Elba, known as the island of a thousand fires by Greek navigators. The Etruscans worked metal incessantly, extracting it from minerals in forges that were fired up day and night, and so to the navigators who took shelter in the island’s natural ports the thousand lights that lit up the night must have seemed almost magical.
To travel along the Etruscan roads, a trip to discover the island’s natural and historical beauties is a must. To feel like an ancient Etruscan trader, discover the outdoor excursions in the beautiful landscape of the Rio Marina Mining Park, or visit the Portoferraio Civic Archaeological Museum, which houses ceramic and bronze items from the island’s tombs and necropolises.
