The Giovanni Fattori Museum is an unmissable stage of culture in Livorno, and is also the place that documents the young Modigliani’s life.
The museum houses some of his works, which contribute to the understanding of his process of maturing as an artist.
Amedeo attended the “Liceo Classico” (secondary school specialising in classics) but his health was delicate. It was during one of his periods of ill health that he managed to convince his mother Eugenie - always his main reference point - to allow him to learn to draw.
So at just 14 years old, he began his apprenticeship in the Macchiaiolo studio of one of Fattori’s pupils, Gugliemo Micheli.
In 1899, Modigliani’s mother wrote in her diary: “Dedo...no longer does anything but paint, but he does it all day every day, with a passion that enchants me.. His teacher is very happy with him, I’m no expert, but it seems that after studying just three or four months, he isn't too bad at it, and draws well".
He had the possibility of learning and encountering art, and was noticed by Giovanni Fattori himself.
