While staying in Livorno, the young Modigliani organised his own studio in Via Gherardi del Testa 14.
It was a large room on the top floor of a building in Mercato delle Vettovaglie, on the corner of Via Gherardo del Testa. Legend has it that this was where he sculpted the famous heads that gave rise to the “heads” thrown into the canals event.
This is an excellent opportunity to walk around this district and have a look at Livorno’s beautiful market: a splendid structure in Liberty style. It is one of the most interesting Livorno buildings from the second half of the 19th century, where the influence of the great nineteenth-century architectural pieces in iron and glass can be felt.
