Giosuè Carducci Archive Museum

Renovated in 2007 during the centenary of the great poet's death, it offers an educational path that highlights the poet’s life and literary works.    Short historical notes about the Giosuè Carducci Archive Museum

Archive Museum The rooms that currently house the Giosuè Carducci Archive Museum were part of the building that was formerly Palazzo Pretorio until 1838, which then became the current Town Hall. At that time, the building was once used partly as the town hall, and partly as a civil dwelling, and on the ground floor, where the Giosuè Carducci Archive Museum is now housed, there were three Corsiglia shops: a cobblers, a pharmacy and a general store.

The poet used to frequent these places, when, in 1846, suffering from malaria and on advice from his father Michele, he was a guest of Doctor Benedetto Bernieri's family, to a health stay in the hills. Already as a child, Giosue’ used to write short pieces of poetry that he then recited in the village craftsmen's workshops.

The panels in the Carducci Museum retrace the main literary moments of the poet's life, closely linked to perfumes, sounds and atmospheres in the Pisa Maremma, the backdrop to his experiences as a youth.

In fact, Giosuè Carducci spent a part of his childhood in Castagneto and Bolgheri and the evocative power of this countryside reality is a constant in his poetry production.
